InBody Accuracy Facts
Is the InBody 270 accurate?
Yes—when the InBody protocol is followed, it’s one of the most accurate BIA devices available.
Here’s the truth:
1. InBody 270 = Strong agreement with DEXA (considered the gold standard) in published research
Multiple peer-reviewed studies show:
-
InBody 270 body fat % is usually within ~2–3 percentage points of DEXA
-
It has very high correlation with DEXA—often 0.95–0.98, which is extremely strong
-
It tracks changes over time nearly identically to DEXA
2. Critics of InBody make two false assumptions:
A) “If it’s not perfect, it’s useless.”
Total nonsense.
DEXA, BodPod, and hydrostatic weighing also disagree with each other by 2–4%, sometimes more depending on the person’s hydration, bone density, or body shape.
If someone thinks only DEXA is perfect—they don’t actually know the science. Even DEXA has:
-
Manufacturer differences (Hologic vs GE Lunar give different results)
-
Variability based on hydration
-
Differences based on technician setup
-
Differences across machines
DEXA is a fantastic tool—but not flawless.

B) “BIA is all the same.”
Nope!
Do not lump InBody in with:
-
$60 Amazon handheld devices
-
Smart scales on social media
-
Cheap gym bio-impedance machines
The InBody 270 uses:
-
Multi-frequency BIA (smart scales do not)
-
Direct segmental measurements (arms, legs, torso separately)
-
No empirical/age-based estimation for lean mass
-
8-point tactile electrodes to address contact resistance
-
Strict scanning protocol that Gymies Fitness Center strictly follows
That puts it in a completely different class.
3. What REALLY makes the InBody 270 powerful:
Not the exact body fat number—(although it’s far more accurate than people claim)
But the consistency and tracking:
You get weekly/monthly trend data on:
-
Skeletal muscle mass
-
Segmental lean mass
-
Body fat mass
-
Visceral fat level
-
Water balance
A scale can’t do that.
A visual guess can’t do that.
Even DEXA isn’t practical for that.
For coaching, transformations, and Gymies Fitness Center members, trending physiology tells the real story, not one snapshot number.

4. InBody is exactly what a serious gym, like Gymies Fitness Center, should have
It gives:
-
Real data
-
Consistent feedback
-
Motivation
-
Education
-
A tool to compare 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months of training
-
Objective measurements
-
Personalized insights
-
Better training outcomes
InBody is used by:
-
Military performance centers
-
Many professional sports teams
-
University strength programs
-
Hospitals and clinical research projects
People calling it “junk” are comparing a tool they don’t understand to a fantasy of perfection that does not exist.
5. The REAL truth:
An imperfect measurement done consistently beats a perfect measurement done never.
You don’t need a $70,000 DEXA machine.
You don’t need a $20,000+ BodPod.
You don’t need hydrostatic weighing.
You need a reliable, consistent, scientifically validated tool.
Which is exactly what the InBody at Gymies Fitness Center provides!
And we diligently follow the protocol by InBody to give our members scans that are clean, consistent, and professional.
